Read the Maine decision to remove Trump from the 2024 primary ballot
On February 8, 2021, the Maine Democratic Party announced its decision to remove Donald Trump from the 2024 presidential primary ballot. The decision follows a review of Trump’s “dangerous and divisive” actions that have “put our democracy in peril” and violate the Maine Democratic Party’s commitments to defending the Constitution. The decision comes after a 5-0-1 vote by the Maine Democratic Party’s Executive Council.
The party said that Trump’s attacks on the integrity of the election, his false claims of voter fraud, and his relentless denials of the legitimacy of President Joe Biden’s election make Trump “unfit” for the role of leader of the Maine Democratic Party. The party also noted that it is deeply concerned about Trump’s comments encouraging violence and rhetoric that poses a threat of harm to Maine’s citizens and its democratic institutions.
The vote disallows Trump from appearing on the ballot during the 2024 Maine Democratic Presidential Primary election. The Maine Democratic Party will continue to monitor events to determine if it is necessary to further modify this decision.
