Nikki Haley was asked what caused the Civil War. She made no mention of slavery.

In response to this question, Nikki Haley stated, “We must remember our history, but that doesn’t mean we have to be prisoners of it. People on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line believed they had legitimate grievances. It is my hope, going forward, that we focus on the strengths and the unity of our country, and I think one of the best ways to do that is to remember our history and not let disagreements define us.”
