Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt resigns from GM-owned robotaxi unit

Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt announced his resignation from the GM-owned self-driving car unit in an internal email on Tuesday.

In the message, Vogt said he is leaving to pursue “entrepreneurial opportunities in the mobility space.” He did not specify what companies he would be joining.

Vogt co-founded Cruise in 2013 and has been its CEO since 2015, when it was acquired by GM. In that time, Cruise has grown into one of the most prominent names in the autonomous car space, with more than 1,000 employees and dozens of cars on the roads in multiple cities.

Vogt’s departure does not affect Cruise’s plans to launch a commercial robotaxi service in San Francisco in the coming months, GM said in a statement. The executive will remain an adviser to the company in the short term. GM Autonomous Vehicle LLC President Dan Ammann will take on the role of Cruise’s executive chairman for the time being.
