Hispanic conservatives defend Univision amid backlash over Trump interview
Hispanic conservatives have come to the defense of Univision amid criticism and threats of a boycott over the network’s decision to air an interview with President Donald Trump.
Gretchen Picado, the president of the Latino GOP, said Univision “made the right decision” in airing the interview between Trump and Univision anchor Jorge Ramos.
“As Latinos,” Picado said, “it is important that we continue to have access to the president of the United States.”
Picado went on to argue that it is “important that we make sure that our voices are heard and our concerns are addressed, no matter who is in office.”
These conservative views were echoed by Alfonso Aguilar, the president of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, who said that if anything, it is more important to be listening to Trump, not protesting him, in order to appropriately engage the president on issues of importance to the Latino community.
“His interview with Jorge Ramos was an opportunity to create dialogue and engagement,” Aguilar said. “Anything that creates that dialogue is a good thing.”
