Nancy Mace previews House hearing on AI deepfakes
On Wednesday, the House Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Government Operations will hold a hearing titled “Exploring the Use and Misuse of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Media, or ‘Deepfakes.’”
The hearing will explore the implications for national security and democracy of technologies that use artificial intelligence to generate and manipulate video and audio content. According to the hearing description, “A deepfake is a digital-age term for an image, video, or audio recording that is generated and altered by artificial intelligence (AI) to falsely appear as a real recording of events that did not actually occur.”
Witnesses from the Pentagon, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of State, and the Government Accountability Office will provide their perspectives on the use and misuse of deepfakes and how they can be detected. Additionally, experts from the media and academic community will present insights on the implications AI-generated media has for ethics, public discourse, and public trust.
The hearing will also consider potential policy solutions to protect the public from malicious use of AI-generated media. This hearing provides a first step into addressing the various concerns surrounding deepfakes.
