Auto workers union announces tentative agreement to end strike with Stellantis
The United Auto Workers (UAW) union and Stellantis have announced that they have reached a tentative agreement to end the strike that began on December 28, 2020. The agreement includes wage increases, bonuses, and improved job security for workers.
UAW President Rory Gambino said in a statement that “after countless hours of negotiation over the past 12 weeks, our UAW Stellantis bargaining team achieved a highly competitive agreement with the company that sets a standard for workers in the auto industry.”
The strike began after the UAW rejected Stellantis’ initial contract proposal, which included the elimination of thousands of jobs, reducing wages, and placing workers on permanent part-time schedules. After 5 years without a wage increase, the agreement will provide hourly workers with a 3% wage increase for 2021 and a 2.5% wage increase each year for 2022 and 2023.
The agreement also includes a number of bonuses and financial incentives, including signing bonuses of up to $9,000. The agreement also guarantees job security to 1,000 workers and reduces the use of temporary workers.
The agreement still needs to be approved by UAW members across the nation. If approved, Stellantis workers will be the highest-paid hourly auto workers in the country.
