Former Trump attorney Jenna Ellis pleads guilty in Georgia election interference case

Jenna Ellis, a former attorney for former President Donald Trump, has pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in a case relating to allegations that she interfered with efforts to certify the November 3 election results.

Ellis, an ally of the former president, was indicted by a grand jury in Fulton County, Georgia in January 2021. She was accused of attempting to interfere with the proper administration of the election, and was charged with obstruction of justice, election fraud, and interference with the conduct of the election.

In a plea deal with the state Attorney General’s Office, Ellis agreed to plead guilty to obstruction of justice. She has also agreed to cooperate with investigators and provide truthful information as part of the agreement.

Ellis was expected to appear in court today to make her plea official. The plea deal would prevent Ellis from facing further prosecution for her role in the alleged election interference.

Under the plea deal, Ellis could face up to 12 months in prison and up to a $1,000 fine. She will also have to forfeit any public money she received while she was working as Trump’s attorney, and she will be barred from participating in any future political activities.

Ellis’ guilty plea is the first in Georgia related to the 2020 election interference allegations. It is a major victory for the prosecution, as it could potentially be used to push forward additional investigations and charges against other parties.
