Former House speaker floats idea of removing Gaetz from House GOP caucus, committees

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich floated the idea that U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., could be removed from the Republican caucus or his committee assignments if allegations of sexual misconduct with an underage girl prove true.

In an interview with Fox News on Tuesday evening, Gingrich said that if the accusations against Gaetz are proven true, the consequences should be swift and severe.

“My guess is if that’s true, they’ll throw him out of the Republican caucus,” Gingrich said. “And, frankly, they should, they should throw him out of all the committees.”

Gingrich didn’t give his opinion on whether the allegations themselves were true, but his comments suggest he believes there should be serious consequences if they are.

The allegations against Gaetz have not been proven. He has denied the accusations and has not been charged with any crimes.
