IRS consultant charged in leak of tax returns for Trump, wealthy Americans
In January 2020, former Internal Revenue Service consultant John Fry was charged with posting confidential, unlawfully-obtained tax returns of wealthy Americans, including those of President Donald Trump, online. According to the Department of Justice, Fry illegally obtained and posted tax returns from 2014 to 2019 for numerous taxpayers, including President Trump. The act was a violation of the federal Right to Financial Privacy Act.
Fry was released on a criminal complaint, but the investigation is ongoing. If convicted, Fry could face up to 18 months in prison and a hefty fine. This case serves as a reminder to the public that privacy, including that of financial information, should be respected and safeguarded at all times.
