White House pressed Israel during bombing pause to change its strategy

against Hezbollah

It is not clear what exact strategy the White House urged Israel to change. However, during its 2006 military campaign in Lebanon against Hezbollah, the US called on Israel to pursue a more targeted approach and to go after Hezbollah fighters rather than engage in widespread destruction of civilian areas throughout the country. The US also discouraged Israel from launching any large-scale ground invasion of Lebanon. In addition, US officials urged Israel to consider a “sustainable ceasefire” that would cut off the flow of arms and money to Hezbollah and reduce its military capabilities in return for a cessation of hostilities.
