Iowa Gov. Reynolds hits back at Trump as she throws support to DeSantis
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds on Wednesday snubbed President Donald Trump for his suggestion to endorse Rep. Ron DeSantis in Florida’s GOP gubernatorial primary — and indirectly sided with her enthusiastic endorsement of the Florida Republican.
In a statement to the Associated Press, Reynolds said, “I have consistently been one of President Trump’s earliest and most enthusiastic supporters. But, I will make my own independent decisions and endorsements here in Iowa.”
Reynolds has been a vocal champion of DeSantis since first endorsing him in January, citing his “dedication to the people of Florida and his commitment to pro-growth policies that will lead to job creation.”
The Iowa governor continued, saying, “I am proud to support Ron DeSantis for Governor and I look forward to seeing him succeed in Florida.” Reynolds has made multiple trips to Florida this year to campaign with and lend her support to DeSantis.
Reynolds’ statement came hours after Trump tweeted his support of DeSantis’ primary opponent Adam Putnam. Trump later suggested that he may not endorse DeSantis after all.
