New Mexico Republican legislators call for Dem Gov. Grisham’s impeachment after gun order: ‘She’s rogue’
New Mexico Republican legislators are calling for the impeachment of Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham after her latest executive order seeking to restrict gun sales sparked outrage among gun-rights advocates.
Senate Majority Leader Greg Baca, a Republican from Belen, wrote in a statement on Monday, “The Governor’s actions to circumvent our laws, our constitution and our rights as citizens of New Mexico is intolerable. She has no authority to unilaterally alter or override state law, especially on an issue as serious as citizen’s rights to bear arms under both the New Mexico Constitution and the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. It’s time for the Legislature to take action against the Governor’s rogue reign.”
Other state Republican leaders, such as Senate Republican Whip Stuart Ingle, have joined Baca’s calls for the governor’s impeachment. However, it is unclear if the Democratic-majority legislature will take any action against the governor. In the meantime, gun-rights advocates are preparing to take their opposition to the governor’s order to the courts.
